The definition of a ‘smart city’ is not universal but is city specific. A Smart City provides smart infrastructure and enhances the quality of life for its citizens. Citizen participation is one of the corner stones of a smart city.

The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development. The objective of the Smart Cities Mission is to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local development and harnessing technology as a means to create smart outcomes for citizens.

Each city formulates its own unique vision, mission and plan for a “smart city.” Their concepts reflect the city’s local context, resources, and priorities of citizens. Smart Cities embrace ideas that have been proven elsewhere and customize them to meet genuine local needs. They create replicable models, acting as light houses, showing the way for others to follow.

Smart Cities explore, refine, and revise their ideas until they get it right. They are realistic, but they are also optimistic. They aim high!”
